Supporting WIT…
Why did you start volunteering with WIT?
I began volunteering with WIT after graduating from the Single Mothers Program. WIT provided me with the opportunity to transform my life through the Single Mothers Program and I wanted to give back. I desired to be involved in something greater than myself, so WIT came at the perfect time. I witnessed everything that they were doing for single moms and the community, and I was instantly captivated.
What do you find most rewarding about volunteering with WIT?
The most rewarding aspect of volunteering with WIT is knowing that I am a member of an organization that is committed to advocating for women and young girls in STEAM fields.
What is your favorite program/event within WIT?
My favorite program is WIT Girls. This program provides opportunities, resources, and much needed guidance while fostering confidence in our future women leaders. I love this program because it is what I needed when I was a young inquisitive girl with numerous questions and no voice to ask them. It is what I needed when I wanted to study and pursue science projects, but none of my friends were interested. It is what I needed when I would be called a nerd just because I wanted to discuss Biology instead of boys. I have witnessed how WIT Girls has shaped the minds of so many young ladies in an exceptional manner and it fulfills my heart to be a part of that. I just hope that I say or do something that will positively impact these young women in the future.
About our Volunteer…
What about you… What would you like to share that people may not know about you?
One thing that people don’t know about me is that I am learning how to play the electric guitar. I have always felt connected to music because my first love is dance but I also played the flute in my middle school band. Recently, I have been intrigued by the electric guitar, so I decided to teach myself how to play.
What experience in your life made you a stronger person?
Being a single mother is the experience that has made me the most powerful in my life. It has boosted my patience, understanding, resilience, and perseverance. Nothing about being a single mother is easy, but it has taught me that there is nothing that is too difficult to get through. It has also taught me to always face challenges with my head held high and to give grace to myself and others.
