WIT Her Story: Sarah Masud

Meet Sarah Masud.

Sarah is a 4th-year Ph.D. student at LCS2, IIIT-D studying Hate Speech on the web.

She has published in top-tier conferences and journals. Sarah is also a volunteer with JOSS and AntiaB.org.

In the photo shown, Sarah is presenting a summary of the work done so far in 3 years of her Ph.D. to a panel of reviewers at the annual apex meeting for the national PMRF scholars, 2023.

I was fortunate to attend the 17th Academic Research and Careers for Students Symposium (ARCS’23) as one of the 30 Ph.D. students nominated from across India.

I presented a poster and lightning talk about our research on “Proactively Reducing the Hate Intensity of Online Posts via Hate Speech Normalization,” which was accepted at KDD’22, a core A* conference in Computer Science.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to be in the same career field?

It is always important not to get overwhelmed by the fast pace of the NLP and to stay focused on your problem area. It may take a few hits and misses, but eventually, you should develop a system of depth and breadth of the subject matter that works for you.
