Supporting WIT…
Why did you start volunteering with WIT?
I really connect with WIT’s mission, because I come from an education system that didn’t emphasize STEM or even higher education in general. While I am fortunate to be where I am, I think I would have done things a lot differently if I had been given the opportunity to explore these things before jumping into my education.
What do you find most rewarding about volunteering with WIT (Program you are volunteering for… ex: WIT Girls, Campus, Careers, YoPros and Events (Forums, Socials, Signature Events)?
The women I collaborate with through WIT are absolutely the most inspiring and uplifting people in my life. In my industry, I am always the youngest person in the room, and usually the only woman. WIT is such a welcome change from that, because I have the opportunity to work with like-minded women who just want to support and celebrate each other.
What is your favorite program / event within WIT?
WIT Mentors will always hold a special place for me. It was the program that got me involved with WIT, and gave me the opportunity to grow as a volunteer and a leader. It almost feels selfish, because I think I benefited as much from the program as the girls do!
About our Volunteer…
What about you…What would you like to share that people may not know?
I have an undergraduate degree in biology, and even though I didn’t make a career out of it, I’m still a big science nerd. I volunteer at the Chattahoochee Nature Center leading nature hikes, and at the beginning of this year, I hiked out in the rain to see a rare spider that made its way here all the way from Japan. I love to teach people about bugs and snakes and other creepy crawlies, because the more you know about something, the less scary it becomes.
Please answer at least 3 of the questions below of your choice.
What is the best place you have traveled to?
I studied wine in Italy for a summer in college, so I spent a weekend in Taormina, Sicily. We took a boat ride to the sea caves and took a swim in the Mediterranean, and it is still my favorite travel memory.
What is your favorite place to eat?
At my mom’s kitchen table. Nothing beats a home-cooked meal with your family.
