WIT Volunteer Spotlight

  • Hometown: Newark, California

  • Volunteer Position at WIT? WIT Girls Program Manager

  • How long have you volunteered for WIT? I am not quite sure, 1 year or close to it I think.

Supporting WIT…

Why WIT? Why did you start volunteering with WIT?

I found WIT in 2017, at a time when I was searching high and low for a community that could relate to me being a minority woman in healthcare IT. I was desperately looking for women who had walked the path I was on and that I could learn from. After my first event, I was hooked and have been plugged in ever since! After several years of passive participation, I decided to start volunteering with WIT because I wanted to step it up and become more deliberate in my support of the organization that helped me realize my potential and promise.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering with WIT (Program you are volunteering for… ex: WIT Girls, Campus, Careers, YoPros and Events (Forums, Socials, Signature Events)?

Whether I am volunteering with the Single Mother’s Program, WOTY Awards, or WIT Girls I am always excited to meet new women and girls who are unabashedly making intentional moves in their lives. Starting their day early to be at the Forums, arranging their work and personal lives to make the evening socials, or coming out on the weekends is a choice we all make to invest in ourselves. In meeting these strong like-minded women, I always find it serendipitous that we often don’t recognize or celebrate our awesomeness until we can impart our knowledge onto someone else experiencing the exact same thing or needs a little encouragement to keep going. WIT provides the much needed space and opportunity to foster informal mentoring and modeling at every event. And my cup overflows with joy when I can help facilitate the sharing of our journeys, lessons learned, and how we are actively becoming the best version of ourselves.

What is your favorite program / event within WIT?

I have attended many events with WIT and loved them all from the monthly Forums to the Annual WOTY gala. But my favorite has to be where I gained my first exposure, and that is the Forums. I cherish the sight of so many busy professional women deciding to be intentional and starting their day once a month pouring into each other and tackling the most relevant topics facing STEAM. The Forums offer an intimacy that is unparalleled. For example, during the pandemic when the Forums were virtual,

I took advantage of the opportunity and created a cohort of women at work that I would invite to virtually participate with me. During and after the forum, I facilitated a dialogue about the gems and nuggets we each picked up. It is all about the connections and conversations for me!

Capri, Italy has to be on the top of my list. I was instantly transported to a world of euphoria with all of my senses fully awakened. It is absolutely stunning.
