Spotlight on Excellence: Monika Mueller, 2024 WIT Awards Winner

About the Women of the Year Awards

The Women of the Year Awards, hosted annually by Women In Technology (WIT), celebrates exceptional women across Georgia who are making a significant impact in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Now in its 24th year, the WIT Awards honor leaders, innovators, and advocates who pave the way for future women in STEAM.

Monika’s Advice:

“For young women and girls considering a career in STEAM, my key piece of advice is to take risks. Don’t wait until you feel completely qualified—often, you only need to be about 80% qualified for any job, role, or project you’re offered. You’ll learn the remaining 20% as you go, and this is what stretches and grows you as a professional. If you’re excited about an opportunity, raise your hand and use your voice.

Grab a seat at the center of the table, even if it feels intimidating. Your perspective is valuable, and being present in discussions can lead to growth and new opportunities. Embrace the uncertainty; it’s where learning happens. Remember, every step you take builds your confidence and expands your horizons. Don’t let self-doubt hold you back—seize the moment and show the world what you can achieve! “

Can you share your career journey and what led you to your current role in the tech/STEAM field?

Growing up with one of the first female software engineers, I witnessed firsthand the resilience, curiosity, and passion that drove her. Watching her navigate a field that was often challenging yet full of potential inspired me profoundly. Her example sparked my own desire to improve processes, imagine new possibilities, and build meaningful solutions. Over time, I realized that technology was a powerful enabler in achieving these goals, allowing me not only to innovate but to bring ideas to life in ways that can make a lasting impact.

How do you envision the future of women in technology, and what changes would you like to see?

I envision a future where women in technology are not only well-represented but also leading in ways that resonate with their authentic selves. I see more women at the table, embracing their identities and driving innovation in diverse ways.

However, we must also focus on younger girls, especially in the later elementary school years, when societal pressures start to influence their choices—where being smart isn’t seen as cool and focus shifts toward physical appearance and boys. We need to capture their imagination before these pressures take hold, showing them the exciting possibilities within technology.

By fostering supportive environments and mentorship from an early age, we can empower these girls to pursue their interests in STEAM. This vision can lead to a technology landscape that values collaboration and diversity of thought, ultimately resulting in solutions that reflect the needs of all users. Change is happening, and with collective action, we can ensure that more women thrive in tech.

How do you use your position to empower or mentor other women/girls in STEAM?

In my position, I empower and mentor women and girls in STEAM by leading by example and taking the risks associated with shining a light on subconscious bias. I openly share my journey, including personal and sometimes uncomfortable experiences, which makes me vulnerable, but I believe it’s important to talk at this level to inspire others. I lead workshops that broaden the roles of women in tech beyond coding, covering areas like business analysis, UI/UX design, DevOps, and product ownership. I also believe in setting up succession plans and grooming future leaders, as I cannot work through a door without extending my hand for someone to walk in behind me. By advocating for inclusive environments and collaborating with educational institutions, I promote STEAM initiatives that encourage diverse perspectives, aiming to inspire the next generation and foster a supportive community where everyone can thrive.

What does selection as a finalist for the WIT Awards mean to you, and how do you feel this recognition can inspire others?

Being selected as a finalist for the WIT Awards is incredibly meaningful to me, as it reflects the nonlinear journey I’ve taken in my career. My path hasn’t always been straightforward; I’ve taken time off to care for my kids, stepped back to support my parents, and stepped forward to take risks that made a significant impact. Through all these experiences, I’ve learned that resilience, risk-taking, and an unshakeable belief in oneself are crucial to overcoming obstacles. If I can navigate this journey, then anyone else can too.

This recognition serves as a reminder that success is attainable for all who dare to dream and take bold steps forward. I hope it inspires others, especially women and girls, to pursue their passions and embrace their unique journeys.
