Sheria Bess
“To all the young women and girls out there with a spark of curiosity for STEAM, I say this: believe in your own brilliance. Don’t let anyone dim your light or convince you that you don’t belong. The world of STEAM needs your unique perspective, your creativity, and your passion. Don’t get caught up in comparing yourself to others. Your journey is your own, and your strengths are what will set you apart. Embrace challenges, learn from your mistakes, and never stop exploring. The possibilities in STEAM are limitless, and you have the power to shape the future with your talents. So, go out there, be bold, be curious, and most importantly, be yourself. The world is waiting for your innovations!”
What inspired you to pursue a career in tech/STEAM, and who has been your most significant influence?
My journey into the world of tech began with a spark of fascination during my early years in the USMC. It was there, amidst the rigorous training and demanding schedules, that I encountered my first computer system. I was instantly captivated! It was like discovering a hidden superpower – the ability to command and control information with a few keystrokes. I knew then that this was the path I wanted to forge. While I was able to secure some tech-related roles after my service, it was a chance encounter with a true mentor, Arden Peterkin, that catapulted my career in information security. He generously shared his expertise and provided me with the essential knowledge and guidance I needed to thrive in the STEAM field. Arden not only opened doors for me but also instilled in me the importance of paying it forward, a principle I wholeheartedly embrace. So, you could say my tech journey started with a bang (literally, with the Marines!) and was ignited by a spark of curiosity that turned into a lifelong passion. And now, I’m driven to share that passion and help others discover their own superpowers in the world of technology.
What challenges have you faced as a woman/girl in STEAM, and how did you overcome them?
You know, it’s funny, the biggest hurdles I’ve faced in STEAM haven’t been external barriers or biases, but rather, my own internal struggles. Navigating a demanding career while managing ADHD and PTSD has been a real challenge, and sometimes, I admit, I’ve been my own worst enemy. There were times when self-doubt crept in, and imposter syndrome whispered those insidious lies. I questioned my abilities and lacked the confidence I needed to truly excel. But then, something amazing happened. I started mentoring young girls in STEAM. Seeing their enthusiasm, their eagerness to learn, and their belief in themselves sparked something within me. It was through empowering them that I finally found the confidence to believe in myself. Those incredible young women showed me the impact I could have, and they helped me realize that my experiences, even the struggles, had value. They reminded me that we all have something unique to contribute to the world of technology. Now, I’m fiercely passionate about giving back to the community of women and girls in tech. Because when we come together, when we support and uplift each other, we create a powerful wave of change, paving the way for generations of women to come.
What excites you most about the future of technology/your field?
What excites me most about the future of technology, especially in my field of security compliance, is the incredible potential of AI. It’s like having a super-powered assistant that can sift through mountains of regulations and identify potential risks with incredible speed and accuracy. Think about it: the world of compliance is constantly evolving, with new regulations and requirements popping up all the time. AI can help us navigate these complex landscapes with greater efficiency and ease, ensuring we stay ahead of the curve. And let’s not forget about automation! It’s been a game-changer, streamlining those tedious and time-consuming tasks that come with managing compliance for a large organization. AI and automation are revolutionizing how we build and maintain robust compliance programs, allowing us to meet those rigorous requirements without breaking a sweat. Honestly, it feels like we’re on the cusp of a real revolution in security compliance, and I’m incredibly energized to be a part of it!
How do you use your position to empower or mentor other women/girls in STEAM?
I believe in proactive mentorship. Instead of waiting for women and girls to reach out for help, I go to them. I initiate those candid conversations, creating a safe space where they can open up about their challenges and aspirations. You see, in my experience, many women and girls in STEAM, myself included, often hesitate to ask for help. We try to navigate the complexities of our field alone, sometimes struggling in silence. That’s why I make a conscious effort to check in with my colleagues, mentees, and even strangers. I ask them how they’re really doing, both personally and professionally. And you’d be amazed by what happens when you simply offer a listening ear and a supportive presence. People start to share their struggles, their doubts, and their dreams. It’s in those moments that true mentorship blossoms. By taking the initiative, I can provide guidance, encouragement, and resources to those who need it most, even if they weren’t actively seeking it. It’s about fostering a culture of support and empowerment, where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
What are your goals for the future, and how do you hope to continue making an impact in STEAM?
My future goals are deeply intertwined with my passion for empowering women and girls in STEAM. At Equifax, we’re building a vibrant community of women in tech, fostering connections and providing the support and resources they need to thrive. We’re not just mentoring and empowering; we’re actively reaching out to women in all areas of the company, even those who may not have considered a career in STEAM. We’re breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes, showing women from all backgrounds and education levels that they belong in the world of technology. We’re igniting that spark of curiosity and helping them discover their own potential to innovate and create. My vision for the future is a world where every woman and girl feels empowered to pursue her passions in STEAM. I want to see more women leading the charge in technological advancements, breaking glass ceilings, and inspiring the next generation of innovators. I believe that by fostering a culture of inclusivity, mentorship, and support, we can unlock the immense talent and potential that women bring to the table and create a truly diverse and dynamic future for STEAM.
