WIT Girls DataFest 2025

A unique STEM experience for high school juniors and seniors!

Event Overview

The American Statistical Association (ASA) DataFest is a celebration of data where teams work around the clock to analyze a large, complex data set. In partnership with Emory’s Quantitative Theory and Methods (QTM) Department, WIT Girls provides 20 high school students with the opportunity to learn data skills during two training sessions and apply them at the DataFest hackathon.

Key Dates

  • March 22, 2025 (Training 1: R Basics):
    8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
    Includes registration and device pick-up/software installation from 8:00 – 9:00 AM.
  • March 29, 2025 (Training 2: DataFest Prep):
    8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
    Includes registration from 8:00 – 9:00 AM.
  • April 4-6, 2025 (DataFest Hackathon):
    • April 4: Begins in the early evening.
    • April 5: Runs all day.
    • April 6: Concludes in the afternoon with final presentations.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be a WIT Girls member.

  2. You must be enrolled in a Georgia high school program or equivalent homeschool program and be in your junior or senior year.
  3. Possess a strong aptitude for mathematical concepts, including statistics.
  4. Be able to commit to the following dates and times:
    • March 22, 2025: Training 1 (R Basics): 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
    • March 29, 2025: Training 2 (DataFest Prep): 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
    • April 4-6, 2025: DataFest Hackathon
  5. Arrange for reliable transportation to/from venues.
    If transportation is a concern, contact WIT at WITGirls@mywit.org to discuss possible solutions.
  6. Be a quick learner who thrives in team environments, loves solving complex problems, and has a passion for STEM.
